Dormant Design by Else Maria

Who and what is Dormant Design?

My name is Else Maria and I'm the designer and creater of Dormant Design. I create digital knitting and sewing patterns for sale. My style and creations are heavily inspired by previous decades, but made to fit into modern life and fashion.

How did Dormant Design start?

I've always been inspired and fascinated by the style and expression of the 50's, and in 2017 I learned how to sew in order to make clothes for myself in said style. I soon realised that I loved redesign and turning thrifted objects and textiles into new garments, and I played around with shape and form in order for the design to fit my style. In the later years I stopped being solely inspired by the 50's, and I now take inspiration from a wide range of decades, all the way from the 1890's to the 1980 's. I also learned how to construct my own patterns as to more easily create the garments that I wanted, and thus a new passion was born: pattern construction.

After being asked a number of times on Instagram about which patterns I use, I realised that there are other people who love the same vintage inspired style as myself, and I decised to finally start commersialising patterns for sale.

Why the name Dormant Design?

The word "dormant" is used to describe something that is temporarily inactive or sleeping. Futhermore, it can be used to describe something that was once inactive, but has now woken again. This represents both my passion for kindling new life into old garments through redesign, but also how how styles are once again being expressed through the designs I create. And of course, we do love a little alliteration.
